Power Gems at Cine Gear 2024 at Warner Bros

At Cine Gear (Friday, 8 June and Saturday, 9 June 2024), held at Warner Bros Studios in Burbank, we introduced our new LED controller family. From tiny controllers that can squeeze into props, to a 40-way controller with built-in 3kW power supply for the largest feature-film sets, there is a device for every occasion.

Recovering from the intense past few months of product innovation and design, Phil says, “For us, it was a great show, with considerable interest in the new LED products and a steady stream of visitors. LA remains quiet as film and TV production struggles post-strike and COVID, but at Cine Gear, the visitor numbers were amongst the highest since we first started coming at the turn of the century. Yes, turn of the century, meaning 2000, not 1900 – we’re long established (1991), but you know how it is; in your head, you’re still a young and scrappy start-up.”

Patrick points out, “But maybe it’s an unfair comparison with last year, when thousands of visitors swarmed to the booth.”

In 2023, there was much excitement on New York Street at Paramount Studios, when a swarm of bees chose the Power Gems booth, and formed a colony on a truss, leading to momentary mayhem.

As seen above, the booth was lit by GEMwash, an LED fixture for large-area lighting, and GEMtile, a 70W LED bi-colour, extremely lightweight, broadcast-quality replacement LED ceiling tile for standard 600mm/2ft commercial office style fixture.

And dwarfing the bottle of water (above, left) is GEM40 is the world’s first combined 3kW power supply and PWM controller for up to 40 channels of 12V or 24V LED light source.

Meanwhile, bathed in a rosy glow (above), GEMmicro is a 4-channel LED drive with wireless DMX control and over-current protection to make it easy to drive off-the-shelf LED Ribbons and COBs. While GEMboost does what it says on the tin: boost 2.5-6V from a Li-ion Cell or USB Power Bank to a fixed 12V supply, for up to 36W of compact built-in power.

And while we’re as guilty of having our heads turned by shiny, bright new things, our core product range of HMI lighting ballasts continues to receive attention. For example, the EB425P GEN2 4KW/2.5KW/1.8KW/1.2KW a high-speed ballast designed to operate in high humidity. Jeremy, who takes pride in the quick turnaround times for servicing and repairing ballasts at the LA facility, was quick to reminded visitors that he recently enjoyed a streak

Interestingly, Sam Scibetta from Warners Bros demonstrating a 60-year-old carbon arc light which he has renovated, was a very popular demonstration at Cine Gear 2024
