Power Gems invest in better testing and repair

Power Gems wants to ensure you receive the best after-care for your ballasts. So, we’re investing in people and facilities as part of a plan to improve repair turnaround times.

This investment includes reconfiguring the Power Gems workshop in Manchester HQ and putting more of our people through vocational qualifications.

Gaining qualifications and progressing to Production

Power Gems assembler Ben Webb with BTEC certificateThis month Michal Nazarewski and Ben Webb started back at Trafford College in Manchester on a part-time basis, sponsored by Power Gems. Ben (pictured) was recently awarded his BTEC Level 3 certificate, and both are now powering onto the HNC qualification.

Ben and Michal, who are currently assembly staff, will begin spending time in Production Test – putting their new-found skills into practice.

“We’re pleased to see people progressing through the company,” says co-owner Phil Ellams, who has responsibility for product design, “and it’s good to have staff who are multi-skilled. Also, we believe that the more our staff know about the product as a whole the better they can carry out their day-to-day tasks.”

Quality Control, Testing and Repair of ballasts

The Power Gems engineers who test new products for delivery to customers also carry out repairs to customer equipment. This is a nice closed loop as the engineers get to see what problems can occur in the field. However, when the production lines are busy, this puts a lot of pressure on the department. As a consequence, we have decided to reinforce the staffing levels in test and repair.

The Test Engineers have a vital role in the company as they are the final link in the Quality Control chain and ensure that the product will meet customer expectations. They also use their testing and repairing knowledge to assist customers with technical enquiries by email and telephone.

Support from the engineers who test your ballast

So if you are buying or repairing one of our ballasts you may end up speaking with the very engineer who carried out the production testing, and who is intimately acquainted with the product.

The additional staffing at Power Gems is being combined with investment into the product test facilities. We are streamlining and expanding the test and repair area to increase capacity and improve efficiency. We hope customers will see the benefit in the near future with improved repair turnaround times.
