Power Gems, Christmas lights and MicroSalon Madrid
At this time of year Madrid is decked out in Christmas lights, but Patrick didn’t stop to admire the power supplies or check for flicker-free fairy lights. He was off to ECAM for the MicroSalon AEC Spain and a gathering of the great and good in the world of cinematographers.
In its second year, the event proved to be an excellent meeting point for the Spanish film and TV community.

In this balcony shot, you can see a 20-year-old Power Gems ballast still being used by the students, to power a K5600 Alpha. Just goes to show how robust and reliable our ballasts are!
Patrick took along a selection of our newer ballasts:
- EB180P (1.8kW, 1.2kW, 800W, 575W) ballast which runs ARRI M18s, M8s and 1,200W light fixtures plus 575W fixtures.
- EB425P which can operate on any supply voltage worldwide, and power up to 4 different lamp powers (4kW, 2.5kW, 1.8kW, 1.2kW). This ballast is known for being extremely lightweight and quiet.
- EB960P (9kW, 6kW, 4kW, 2.5kW) complete with 1000Hz Autoscan and volt drop cable compensation features.
- EB1812P (18kW/12kW/9kW/6kW) with unique 1000.0Hz Crystal Locking mode offering further improvements to high speed filming.
These were showcased on the booth we shared with our official Spanish distributor Grau Luminotecnia, on a trip hosted by Alfons Grau Pitarch and Carlos Cledera Castro (our thanks go to both).
We have been working with Grau Luminotecnia for the last two years, and have seen our Spanish business grow, mainly down to our excellent working relationship.

During Friday 14 and Saturday 15 December 2018, twenty-eight exhibitors welcomed visitors from all over Spain. Attendance was up on last year’s figures and the seminars arranged through the course of two days proved popular.
On Friday evening, Grau Luminotecnia took us all for dinner – where we (with our colleagues, K5600 Lighting, DOP Choice, Velvet – the Light, Carpetlight and Spots Unlimited) enjoyed plenty of Jamon Iberico Iberian ham and Rioja, with just a sprinkling of Christmas trees.
