IBC and CINEC – Do trade shows still work?

Power Gems was at IBC and CINEC, where Patrick couldn’t help noticing that the first day of each looked more like the last day. It seemed to be quieter…but was it?

Well, certainly from our pictures you might think so – the Power Gems team took these before the doors opened!

Attendance was slightly down at IBC (55,884 attendees walked through the doors of the RAI in Amsterdam, a 3% drop from 2017).

Was exhibition space down too? We know times are tough for manufacturers, who perhaps can’t afford to go to industry events or justify the expense. Others are focused on their website and social media and see no reason to attend.

For Power Gems exhibiting at trade shows around the world is always positive, perhaps because we use them as an opportunity to launch exciting new additions to our range. This year was no exception, and we had on display our new design LED power supply and driver range – this was a good talking point as to where LEDs might end up.

Patrick has attended International and American trade shows for the best part of 25 years, and both IBC and CINEC stood out for different reasons.

The International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) is held each September in Amsterdam and mirrors the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) which takes places in Spring in Las Vegas. Both shows are geared towards corporate broadcasting and studio requirements and are huge events.

The film and TV lighting requirements for studio and location lighting services, tend to be catered for at Cine Gear Expo held in June in Los Angeles this year, and CINEC in Munich, which finished on 24 September. These shows although much smaller and less fancy, always prove attractive for both manufacturers and end users alike.

What was obvious at IBC and CINEC, is that there’s still an appetite for new product launches, with people lining up for demonstrations at booths. This is always good to see – and was much in evidence at both September shows with Power Gems and other companies such as K5600 Lighting (with their new 300W LED range of light fixtures) investing in the future.

Next stop: Cine Gear Atlanta. See you there?
