China’s movie industry gets Power Gems

In August 2017, Power Gems entered the world’s second-largest film market, China, with the opening of a Service Centre in Shanghai. It’s been an interesting six months, and our commitment to the market has already paid dividends. Working with our valued partner, China Film Equipment Company (CFEC) based in Beijing, we have secured significant orders for electronic ballasts from lighting rental companies in both Beijing and Shanghai.

By 2020, China’s box office is expected to reach RMB200 billion and will exceed North America as the world’s largest market in box office revenue and audience numbers according to the Deloitte report China’s Film Industry: A new era

Ten years ago China was a very small part (1%) of the worldwide box office; now it has almost 20%, and this share is expected to rise to 35% by the year 2020. Hollywood studios don’t want to miss out on such a big market and are going into local production. Chinese investors are keen to be involved in the entertainment industry. The eastern port of Qingdao houses the world’s largest studio, an $8bn venture by real estate developer Wanda, the scale of which – with 30 stages – is a testament to the confidence in the long-term future of the film sector.

The increase in facilities has created a booming market for Power Gems ballasts.

Patrick McGuane, the co-owner of Power Gems who heads up the sales division, says:

“There is high demand for the type of cutting-edge technology, coupled with proven reliability that we can offer. Customers like the idea of investing in ballasts with a high speed 1000Hz option as standard.”

Power Gems always go where movies are made – in 2015 we opened in Atlanta, to support users of Power Gems ballasts in Georgia’s booming film industry. For over 25 years, our facilities in Los Angeles have serviced the Hollywood Studios. In the UK, you’ll find Power Gems at the core of the British film and TV industry at MBS Pinewood, Warner Bros, Panalux and PKE Lighting to name but a few of the larger companies we supply.
