Right to repair Power Gems
At Power Gems we welcome the new right-to-repair legislation; it formalises our way of thinking, that you should be able to repair a product that’s only a few years old.
And you should be able to buy products that are more durable. We make Power Gems to last; typically, the life span far exceeds most power electronics.
The tough new rules introduced by the European Parliament could extend the life of TV and domestic appliances such as fridges and dishwashers by ten years. Right to repair bills have been introduced in several US state legislatures, and although it is a global concern, the issue has centred on Europe and the US.
From Summer 2021, UK manufacturers of consumer electronics are legally obliged to make spare parts available for consumers to make repairs at home, without specialist equipment. While the UK has left the EU, the manufacturing standards will have to match for trade to continue.
The European agreement applies to some electronic goods, and the next step, we hope, is to expand the right to repair to include all power electronics.
We know our product is going to end up in a recycling scheme, but we design Power Gems with an exceptionally long life to reduce waste.
Designed to last longer
We encourage and help you to service Power Gems yourself so that you can get the maximum product life. We keep parts available for longer than most (10+ years).
We’ve never been a fan of the disposable economy. Our product design makes repairs easier in the long run; it’s about simple things such as slide-in panels rather than gluing the product together, and leaving space to work on the components.
We don’t create planned obsolescence or expect you to upgrade to the latest model. In fact, we’re proud of how many elderly ballasts are functioning after twenty years like this EB125P spotted at MicroSalon in Madrid
Manufacturers who don’t respond to emails
Don’t you hate it when a company ghosts you? Sure, they’re all over you to make a sale. Then, you have an after-sales query or a problem, and it’s like you don’t exist. Well, we’re the good guys.
We can help you repair it yourself, and if that doesn’t work, one of our engineers can take a look. And the innovative design of our modular construction allows for swap outs so that modules can be returned to the factory for more complex repairs.
You can always call or email Power Gems in-house service workshops in Manchester (UK) and Los Angeles (USA) for technical queries and support.
And when the time comes to say goodbye
We do everything possible to prevent Power Gems from ending up on the scrap heap sooner than they should. But, when it comes to the end of the product life, you can separate the materials for recycling.
We make it as easy as possible with few welded assemblies or potted components.
