Power Gems and HMI flicker – Digital Cinema Society findings
The first day back at Power Gems HQ in Manchester, UK, and 2017 started as 2016 ended, with flicker-free filming at high speed as the hot topic for debate.
In December, we published the Power Gems newsletter (subscribe here) and the most-read-article by far, was Using HMI Lighting in High Speed Filming
Many of you who read Phil’s article, will be interested in the latest eNewsletter from the Digital Cinema Society. James Mathers, Cinematographer and Founder of DCS, investigates the issue of flicker when shooting at extremely high frame rates with various cinema lighting sources. As well as sharing insight from tests he recently conducted using a broad cross section of products, James references Power Gems as an authority on the subject:
“If you really want to dig into the science of HMI flicker, please see a white paper written by Dr. Phil Ellams, the Engineering Director for Power Gems, a company specialising in the manufacture of HMI ballasts.”
Here’s the article in full: Saturday Night at the Disco or… How to Avoid Flicker When Shooting Hi-Frame Rates
Looking to a great year ahead, with further advances in high speed shooting using Power Gems ballasts.
