Are Power Gems being used for filming in Manchester?
While Power Gems HQ is yet to be chosen as a film location, we’re always pleased to see filming in our home city. Here’s a recent shoot taking place in Manchester, featuring PKE Lighting gear – on a hush-hush American production.
There’s a high chance of Power Gems being on set, as PKE Lighting’s stock of HMI lighting ballasts is now 100% Power Gems.
We’ve been based in Manchester for over 20 years, and regularly see production shoots. We take great pride in counting the largest rental fleets amongst our customers – Cinelease, Panalux, Pinewood MBS, PKE Lighting and Warner Brothers all use Power Gems.
Manchester has been a stand-in for cities on America’s East Coast on several occasions. Most famously being passed off as downtown New York for the filming of Captain America: The First Avenger in 2011. For the first time, Marvel Productions chose to film the franchise outside the USA and made Manchester the primary location for filming.
Most memorably one of the city’s busiest streets, Dale Street in the Northern Quarter, was transformed for a car chase involving 1940s American cars (see below). You can see more candid shots of the cast, crew and equipment used in the production, on the Captain America Filming In Manchester blog

Put up a fake store front, hide the road signs, and there you have it – fake New York. The only authentic touch is the use of Power Gems – which work just as well in the Big Apple.
