Power Gems ballasts used for Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018
The PyeongChang Olympics 2018 is coming soon, with Power Gems helping to provide flicker-free lighting.
The South Korean host city aims to get everything right on 9 February, when the eyes of the world are watching this made-for-TV sporting event.
Our ballasts will give broadcasters flicker-free lightings for super-slow motion cameras at 300 frames per second.
We have been working closely with GE, a Worldwide Partner of the Olympic Games, to supply all the Olympic Games venues. PyeongChang will be the stage for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and most snow sports. Alpine speed events will take place in Jeongseon, and all ice sports will be in the coastal city of Gangneung.
You may remember reading about the 2,000 Power Gems ballasts installed across 7 Olympic venues at the Rio Olympics in 2016.
As well as supplying Rio, Power Gems were used in the Beijing Olympics in 2012 and the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014.
Patrick McGuane, owner of Power Gems who heads up the sales division, says:
“Power Gems take great pride in working on global sporting projects where a reliable electronic flicker-free power supply is a vital part of the overall electrical and lighting scheme, underpinning the quality of the Olympic Games experience being broadcast around the world.”
Power Gems is no stranger to South Korea; we have many ballasts installed with the major car manufacturers including Kia and Hyundai, for vehicle crash testing purposes.
The XXIII Olympic Winter Games will be held for 17 days from 9 to 25 February 2018 in PyeongChang, Gangwon Province, the Republic of Korea. The Olympic Winter Games will be held in Korea for the first time in 30 years after the Seoul Olympic Games in 1988.
The Opening Ceremony marks the start of the Games on Friday 9 February, with the first medal competitions beginning on the Saturday with events in women’s cross-country skiing, women’s biathlon, women’s speedskating, men’s short-track speedskating and men’s ski jumping.
