Pixipixel attends training at Power Gems

Pixipixel has stocked Power Gems for the last five years, and we are pleased to have hosted their maintenance team for a training event in our Manchester HQ.

Chris Shefford, Chris Watts and Matt Townsend from Pixipixel’s new Tottenham branch, work with clients shooting long-form TV drama and feature films, commercials and music videos.

As the ballasts have proven reliable and easy-to-maintain, our one-day training focused on sharing troubleshooting tips and advice – our unique modular design now means ballast downtime is kept to a minimum with the easy exchange of power supply modules. Gone are the days when the majority of ballasts need to be sent back to the manufacturer, incurring hefty maintenance bills.

We are excited to share Pixipixel’s ballast inventory is now nearly 100% Power Gems as the rental house recently took advantage of our special buyback offer to get extra credit against the sale of new Power Gems 1,000Hz ballasts when you trade in older ballasts.

General Manager at Pixipixel, Dave Oldroyd said: “Simply put, lighting crews love using Power Gems for their reliability and all the extra features and technology packed into a compact unit. Whether you’re new to the range or upgrading your ballasts, you’ll find Power Gems easy-to-use and low maintenance.”

Pixipixel is one of the only independent UK rental houses to offer camera and lighting equipment packages. The maintenance team possess an in-depth knowledge of lighting, dimming, cabling and electrical distribution, especially the latest LED products available in the marketplace.

This time two years ago, March 2018, we talked to Pixipixel’s executive team – Toby Newman, Barney Newman and Steve Knight, about the UK’s lighting rental market.

Since we spoke to Toby [read From Stills to Film and TV], Pixipixel has built a new lighting warehouse, double the size of the previous facility. During construction, they dug up more than seven WW2 bombs, making for an interesting 2019.

LED everywhere

Back in 2018, Toby was predicting a big year for LED, and he wasn’t wrong! In the September, we entered the market with our power supply and various types of drivers for all LED requirements. We waited 23 years, so you may be wondering why Power Gems designed a high-power LED power supply.

Traditionally we’ve focused on high-speed HMI ballasts, but co-owner Phil Ellams, who heads up our design team felt the time was right to invest in a cost-effective generation of custom design products for the LED control market. He has been busy designing power supplies for all applications complete with our PWM or constant current drivers. Watch out for our TV credits

Pixipixel has supplied the camera and lighting equipment including Power Gems High Speed 1000Hz ballasts for a number of exciting new shows airing in 2020. Watch out for the highly anticipated period drama Belgravia shot by cinematographer Dale McCready, the return of the acclaimed Sky Original Save Me Too shot by David Pimm, new drama We Hunt Together by cinematographers Oli Russell and Michael Wood, and of course season 2 of Ghosts.
