Is it time we change the way we think about HMI?
When it comes to sustainability, LEDs are touted as the good guys and HMI as the devil.
While investment is continuing to grow in LED technology including here at Power Gems, it’s best not to be so quick to dismiss HMI out of hand.
Phil makes this important point, in The Three Pillars of Sustainability at Power Gems now available to read on our website:
Despite arc technology being well over one hundred years old, modern HMI lamps have surprisingly high efficiency, which still compares well with LED. Over the last thirty years this has allowed end-users to produce light using one-sixth of the energy consumed by tungsten lighting.
However, we recognise an increasing demand in the lighting market as LED efficiency continues to rise, and there is imperative to remove mercury from the system. As a consequence we have poured R&D effort into developing new LED products and have a portfolio of designs in development. We are seeing success with LED at lower powers, but it’s clear that HMI remains a good choice for efficient production of light at higher powers.
We’re launching new LED products throughout 2020 – watch this space.
As for Phil’s views on the thorny issue of using air freight to get products out to you, well, you’ll have to read the rest of the statement to find out.
We couldn’t possibly comment on rumours that he’s cracked teleportation.
What goes on in the Lab, stays in the Lab (except when it appears in an unsuspecting studio in Hollywood).
