From Blue Dot via the moon landing to Power Gems

Jakub Gromadzki began his holiday job at Power Gems a day late with the excuse that he’d been at a festival. Probably not the best start in most places, but at Power Gems we remained relaxed because he came straight from demonstrating Mars rovers at the Bluedot festival.

Bluedot is a festival of music, science, art and space discovery, and takes place every year in the grounds of Jodrell Bank in Cheshire, home to the giant Lovell Telescope (below).

In the week marking 50 years since man landed on the moon, the festival bill featured New Order, Kraftwerk and Hot Chip. Away from the stages, a programme of science, technology and arts proved popular. Over the four days (18-21 July 2019), Jakub helped supervise school parties trying their hand at space exploration by operating a Mars rover.

Jakub has just finished the first year of a degree in electronics at Manchester University which he is enjoying, but says ‘is tougher than expected’.

While working at Power Gems over the summer won’t be as tough, it will still be demanding. Each year we take on a couple of people to provide cover for when members of the team go on holiday. This year, we’re busier than ever with several signficant orders for ballasts meaning the assembly lines must keep rolling.

Jakub is the brother of Michal Nazarewski, who graduated in August 2018 with an HNC Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Michal was sponsored by Power Gems to attend Trafford College on day release.

Both Jakub and Michal work on the production line in the HQ in Manchester, assembling ballasts. It seems that working for Power Gems and studying electronics, runs in the family.
