A new 6-way LED controller – big reduction in size, no reduction in features

We rolled our eyes when Phil announced that he could make an object disappear. Turns out he meant smaller. Much, much smaller than the already compact 6-channel LED controller, thus shrinking the GEM6 down (shown on left) to become the newest product from Power Gems – the GEM6mini.

Let me explain

About a year ago, Power Gems owner and head of design, Phil Ellams, saw a need for a compact 6-way controller. So, he designed the latest addition to our family of LED products, and we welcomed the first batch of GEM6 to roll off the assembly line in Manchester

Everyone loved the GEM6

It was out with Sunbelt Rentals as soon as it was in stock, earning its keep and working its rugged aluminium enclosure off. The silicone bump protection withstands the bumps, knocks and scrapes of life on a location shoot.

For his next trick, Phil designed a super-compact version, which doesn’t take up much space in a kit bag, box, or on set. It has all the features you’ve come to love, just with slightly lower current capability:

  • 6 Output channels. Yes, six. And 5A per channel (10A total).
  • DMX/Lumen radio CRMX or hardwired.
  • Comprehensive short circuit protection.
  • An intuitive menu-driven control, an LCD display, and four large membrane buttons.

“What people like about this product,” Phil says, barely pausing to reflect on success, before beginning his next product design, “is that despite its compact size, we haven’t compromised on features – the GEM6mini has a generous screen and good size buttons, so it’s still easy to operate and has an easy-to-navigate menu system.

I believe we’re unique in having a screen on our smallest product; the closest equivalent on the market is fixed-feature button operation.

We’ve retained the ability to do easy software upgrades (which the user can do), so the product remains up-to-date as new features are released. Also, it comes with comprehensive overcurrent protection. And wired DMX – again unique on a model this size.”
