DCS flicker testing of Power Gems ballasts
When Digital Cinema Society got in touch with Power Gems, we were quick to agree to participate in objective flicker testing of our high speed ballasts.
James Mathers, Cinematographer and Founder of DCS, was keen to investigate the issue of flicker when shooting at extremely high frame rates with various cinema lighting sources.
Over the course of four shooting days, the Digital Cinema Society gathered almost every manufacturer in the cinema lighting industry in a test to explore the issues of flicker in high-frame-rate cinematography.
In December 2016, James published the findings in the DCS article Saturday Night at the Disco or… How to Avoid Flicker When Shooting Hi-Frame Rates
He’s now followed up with The Fickle Finger of Flicker And How To Avoid It, which provides behind-the-scenes documentary coverage of the flicker testing process and conclusions.
View the 15-minute programme here – it’s worth watching to the end for James’ closing advice on filming at high speed.
